04 · Built Work

Selected projects

A short list, chosen for what each one taught rather than for how it photographs. Roles are stated precisely: large buildings are made by large teams.

  1. 01

    Healthcare · Cancer hospital

City of Hope Orange County Hospital

    Irvine, California

A cancer hospital is not a building people visit once. They come back dozens of times, often frightened, and the sequence from parking space to treatment chair does more work than anything that photographs well.

Role: Senior Project Designer · HOK

  2. 02

Science & Technology · Physics research

Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement, Caltech

    Pasadena, California

Instruments measuring at quantum precision impose tolerances no ordinary building meets, and those tolerances organise this one: experimental laboratories below grade where the ground is quiet, theorists and shared rooms in the four levels above. A building arranged around what its equipment cannot tolerate.

Role: Senior Project Designer · HOK

  3. 03

    Aviation · Concourse expansion

Phoenix Sky Harbor Terminal 3 Expansion, T3N2 Concourse

    Phoenix, Arizona

A new concourse added to a terminal that never closes. Every move had to be made around an operation that could not pause. The condition most expansion work is actually designed under, and almost never credited for.

Role: Senior Project Designer · HOK

  4. 04

    Workplace · Corporate headquarters

    Illumina Corporate Headquarters

    San Diego, California

An office tower and parking structure for a genomics company, where the workplace has to hold its own beside the science it exists to serve.

Role: Senior Project Designer · HOK

  5. 05

Urban Design · District master plan

UTC LA Warner Center Master Plan

    Los Angeles, California

Planning at district scale, where the deliverable is a framework other architects will build inside rather than a building. The question that matters is what the plan makes inevitable and what it leaves genuinely open.
